The award was presented Tuesday evening after a tasty dinner at the East Shore Café attended by many of the club members, families and friends, as well as the club's exchange student from Bolivia, Laurita Sotomayor and her current host family, the Garnetts. Also attending were Dave Vieser and Geoff Dunn of the Cayuga Radio Group, and the full Veaner family.

The award citation refers to Dan's development of the Lansing Star online newspaper as "the epitome of community service". Of Karen's conception and chair of the Harbor Festival, it states that "you threw yourself into the fray, and nature's furry notwithstanding, the first one (2007) came off like gangbusters. This year's was even bigger and better. The community has its party!" "Nature's fury" refers to that wild storm that came close to canceling the first Harbor Fest, but was foiled by Karen and her army of volunteers.
The Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary Club has been honoring area residents with their Outstanding Community Service Award for several years. Recent Lansing recipients have been Mary Searles (2007) and Lyle Wadell (2005). This year the award has been re-named in honor of the late Kirk Shreve, owner of the Lansing Funeral Home, member of Lansing United Methodist Church, the Lansing Lions and the Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary Club which serves the Lansing community. Kirk is missed by many, and in his honor a donation will be made by the club in the Veaners' name to an organization of their choice. They chose to direct the donation to the the Lansing Habitat For Humanity house project.
