ImageEvery year student artists and writers have been honored in a nation-wide competition for the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  More than 100,000 entries were submitted by students in grades 7 through 12, and more than 500 of those were from students in the Southern Tier of New York and Northern Pennsylvania.  Of 68 gold and silver key awards in the region, 10 Lansing students walked away with five gold key awards, two silver key awards, and six honorable mentions.

Robin Parkins won two gold key awards for her painting 'Elena,' and a for a self portrait print.  Chris Meagher won a gold key award for his drawing, 'Scatter Mosaic.'  Kate Schuttenberg also won two gold keys for 'Demon in the Family' and 'Fine Line,' as well as an honorable mention for her drawing, 'Beneath Roots.'  'Demon in the Family' also won a 'Best in Show,' which means that it is one of five gold key winners from the region nominated for the American Vision Award.  That is a national competition in New York City later this year that offers gallery exhibitions, prizes, and scholarships.

Lansing silver key winners were Adam Beckwith for his video, 'Snack Aria,' and Mairi Cardone for her drawing, 'Mom.'  Daniel Duthe's 'Self Portrait,' Nicolo Gentile's 'Flower Pedal Self Portrait,' Robert Hayes' graphic 'Flip,' Kendra Hutchins' photograph 'Reflections,'  and Hayley Presthus' print 'Self Portrait' all won honorable mentions.

The awards were presented at the Arnot Museum in Elmira in a gala ceremony celebrating the artists.  Gold and silver key winners  were presented with lapel pins and certificates.  The museum mounted an exhibition of the work it its east gallery that will run through March 6th.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were founded in 1923.  Winners have included many notable artists including Richard Avedon, ruman Capote, Paul Davis, Frances Farmer, Joyce Carol Oates, Phillip Pearlstein, Peter Beagle, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford, Andy Warhol, and Charles White.

Schuttenberg's nomination makes 'Demon in the Family' one of five works from the region to be reviewed in a special adjudication for the American Visions & Voices Medal. One National American Visions & Voices Medalist is recognized from each region.  The winning piece from each region will bring its creator an American Visions & Voices Awards Medal, certificate, and a listing in the national catalog of The Scholastic Art &Writing Awards of 2009.
