The letters are signed by four community leaders: the student’s high school principal, District Attorney Gwen Wilkinson, Amanda Verba, President of the Community Coalition for Healthy Youth, and Nancy Zahler, Director of the Tompkins County Youth Services Department.
In this season of proms, end-of-school activities, and graduations, the coming weeks present plenty of opportunities for teens to make decisions related to drinking alcohol and using other drugs. Young people count on their parents and caregivers for guidance and support when faced with difficult decisions. The Community Coalition for Healthy Youth, a local organization dedicated to reducing alcohol and other substance abuse in Tompkins County, put together this mailing to ask for families’ help in avoiding unsupervised parties and ensuring safe celebrations.
Support and funding was provided by STOP DWI, TST BOCES Youth Development, Ithaca, Trumansburg, Dryden, Newfield, Groton and Lansing school districts, Tompkins County Youth Services Department, Tompkins County District Attorney's office, New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), and the federal SAMHSA grant to the Community Coalition for Healthy Youth.
