Five Lansing teachers were honored at a reception shortly before officially receiving tenure at Monday's Board Of Education meeting.  Recipients were Nicole Ball , Heather Byrne, Wendy Brown, Julie Hempson, and Lindsay Woodward.

"It's very meaningful and it's very important," said Superintendent Stephen Grimm.  "A former superintendent told me, 'You're marrying the teacher to the district.'  It's really a lifetime commitment.  We hope that is the case that these teachers stay with us for the rest of their teaching careers."


The five teachers were introduced by their principals.  Ball is a former architectural space planner who came to Lansing to teach K-6 Elementary Education.  Brown teaches Reading and academic support for students in K-12, who previously was a tenured social studies teacher in Elmira.  Byrne teaches high school math, coming to Lansing with a degree in mathematics and teaching from Ithaca College, and is currently working on her masters degree at Ithaca College.

Hempson, a Homer native, also graduated from Ithaca College with a social studies and education degree, and teaches high school social studies.  She is also working on her masters degree at Syracuse University.  Woodward got her bachelors and masters degrees in English and English education from Truman State University in Missouri, and currently teaches high school English.

"We believe they are excellent now, and that they will continue to grow with us into superior teachers," Grimm said.  "We look for expertise in the science of teaching, but also in the art of teaching that goes to that next level in the future."
