Marcy Rosenkrantz presented the Lansing Town Board with a proclamation to declare this February 'Library Lovers Month' at Wednesday's Town Board meeting.
"The Tompkins County Public Library Foundation and Board of Trustees, and all of the libraries in Tompkins County are putting forth resolutions, proposals, or proclamations to proclaim February as Library Lovers Month," she said. "This is a proclamation that I am proposing be read into the minutes."
The proclamation notes that libraries provide connections to the past and future of communities they serve, and provide an entry point for research on many important subjects. It describes benefits including support for literacy, access to computers and the Internet, and programs that benefit school children.
It also notes that 10,413,962 New Yorkers hold library cards, and that 40,528 Tompkins County residents have them. It was read into the record by Councilman Marty Christopher.
"It's a time for us to celebrate libraries," Rosenkrantz said. "To celebrate all that we do for libraries and all that they do for us. Libraries, especially in difficult financial times, are a lifeline for citizens of our county, and it's really important that we support them in any way we can. If you visit the Tompkins County Library next month you will see a sign that says '50 ways to love your library.' I hope that everybody will take note of at least one of those things, even if it's just to thank your local librarian."
