"That is a lot of your time, a lot of your energy, and countless hours that people don't realize you put in," Competillo said. "Hours of reading, hours of researching, being here until all hours of the night. that does not go unnoticed by your peers, by your community, or by the Central New York State School Boards Association."

a golden apple to commemorate his school board service
Cheatham has served as a board member since defeating Christine Iacobucci in 2007. This year he decided not to run again. Iacobucci, who has served two previous terms, won the seat in the May election.
Competillo presented Cheatham with a coffee mug filled with chocolate. Superintendent Stephen Grimm presented Cheatham with a golden apple, a Lansing tradition for outgoing board members.
"I think his approach is a great balance for the model of what we're trying to create in our school system, which is high intelligence and high character," Grimm said. "Mike has that. Not only does he have it, but he practices it and he applies the rules of what we should be doing as a board on a daily basis. When we make decisions Mike is processing them through the filters of our policies and the way that we should be behaving. He;s been a great model for us to be able to continue to do that and we're going to miss that level of expertise on the board."
"It has been a privilege and an honor to serve the Lansing community as a board member," he said. "I've learned an awful lot about what goes on in the school district, and also what applies in general to education that I was never aware of. I value that a lot."
