igc_120The Ithaca Garden Club recently presented a "Garden-gating" event to benefit its Civic Development Fund. About $6,000 was raised through the efforts of over 50 club members and through the generosity of donors of supplies and services needed for the unique event.

The Garden Club's Civic Development activities feature ongoing projects such as holiday decorations for health care facilities, Arbor Day plantings, and recognition of gardeners; as well as major support of plantings at new or renovated buildings including the Hangar Theatre, Cancer Resource Center, Sciencenter, and Museum of the Earth.

"Garden-gating" was held on the grounds of the John Joseph Inn in Lansing. Members created a dozen displays using flowers and other decorative items to correspond with a vintage car's era. They used the concept of tailgate parties before sporting events when planning the displays and the event's refreshments and entertainment.

Volunteer leaders for the event included Sue Hamilton, Marlene Jewell, Karen Jackson, Fair Gouldin, Jan Russell, Wendy Blanchard, Donna Clark, Joyce Barney, Kay Ross, Amanda Steinhardt, Janice Hertel, Barbara Stewart, Dolores Adler, Pam Swieringa, Vicky Myers, Rita Boothroyd, Sandy Stone and Charlotte Shull.
