spca_cats120Imagine being cared for by a single individual your whole life, almost never seeing another living soul. Then suddenly, your guardian is gone and you are in a new place with new people, noises and smells. You get poked and prodded and the food you are given isn’t what you are used to.

That’s how six cats who have come to the SPCA feel right now. Their guardian has passed away and as many as 20 cats who were living in the home need our help. In small batches, we are taking them in, providing medical treatment and spaying/neutering them. The shelter cannon accommodate all 20 cats at once so it is important to find them new homes as soon as possible.

Abigail Smith, Executive Director says “We have limited places in the SPCA where we can keep cats who are this frightened of people quiet and as stress-free as possible. They are available for adoption, but putting them on the adoption floor would be unkind. We are hoping members of the public will hear about these cats’ dilemma and consider coming in to adopt them.”

Here are some tips for people considering adopting a cat who is very timid of new people and environments:

  • Give the cat some space. You might want to pick her up and cuddle her but she will come to you when she is ready for this.
  • Have as much interaction with the cat as possible. Be in the same room with her, dangle a toy for her, place a treat near her. When she comes close to you, let her sniff you and get to know you as you hold still.
  • When you first pet the cat, pet her by stroking her away from you – sort of gently pushing. This will relieve her sense of anxiety about being trapped or picked up by you.
  • Make sure your cat eats and drinks. Leave food and water in a safe quiet place and give her ample time to eat when you are not in the room. Check her dishes often to make sure she is eating enough.  Very slowly move the dishes nearer to its permanent location so that she feels safe eating there.

Cats usually enjoy human company and you will be surprised at how quickly a cat who is safe and well-fed will become your best friend.
