commons_aerial120Today (February 11, 2011) is a special day for 2-1-1 call centers across the country including the 2-1-1 call center serving Tompkins County. National 2-1-1 Day celebrates the work of 240 active 2-1-1 Call Centers in 46 states serving 82% of the U.S. population.

One of the three arms of the Human Services Coalition, 2-1-1 Tompkins and its team of trained Information and Referral (I&R) Specialists help community members connect with local, regional, and national resources, offering referrals to help with a variety of situations. Dialing 2-1-1 from any phone in Tompkins County puts you in touch with a 2-1-1 I&R Specialist. 2-1-1 confidential phone service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with local specialists responding to inquiries weekdays between 8:30 am and 5 pm.

A community resource since 1978, the Information and Referral Program introduced 2-1-1 Tompkins in October of 2007. In 2010, 8,822, mostly Tompkins County residents, sought assistance from 2-1-1.

Local residents can help celebrate February 11 by calling 2-1-1 or 1-877-211-8667 for help finding a community service. Let the Call Specialist know you are calling 2-1-1 in honor of National 2-1-1 Day. You may also connect in real time via web chat with a local I&R Specialist Monday through Fridays 8:30-5pm. Walk-in information is available in the Women’s Community Building at 100 West Seneca St. on February 11th and every Monday through Friday 8:30-5pm.

The Tompkins County Legislature and Mayor Carolyn Peterson have issued official proclamations declaring February 11, 2011 “2-1-1 Day” in Tompkins County.

Tompkins County, the City of Ithaca, the towns of Ithaca and Groton, along with the United Way, and the Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency Community Development Block Grant provide critical support for 2-1-1 Tompkins.
