tcat_NewShelter120Passengers arriving from across the country to the Ithaca Bus Station, 710 W. State St., now have a bus shelter where they can escape the elements and wait for a TCAT bus to get them to where they need to go in the Tompkins County area.

Construction workers relocated the shelter to the bus station this past week from State and Geneva streets, where it was underused, McLellan said, adding that it will get much more use at its new location.

“This is a nice addition for people arriving to Ithaca, particularly those for the first time, to make an easy and immediate connection to the local transit provider,” said TCAT’s Passenger Amenities Supervisor A. Michael McLellan.

McLellan said the shelter will also serve many other TCAT riders – especially those from the West Hill area.

McLellan said TCAT maps and other route information are placed in the shelter to help direct passengers arriving from intercity bus providers to include Greyhound, Adirondack Trailways, NewYork Trailways and Short Line.

“It was a much‑needed designated stop and we have been working on this project for some time to make it a reality,” McLellan said. “We are already receiving many positive comments about it.”

McLellan offered special thanks to the Ithaca City Department of Public Works for laying the concrete pad and to McPherson Builders Inc., Ithaca, for moving and setting up the shelter.
