lions_banner120The Lansing Lions club honored three community members with Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Awards Monday.  The Uplinger Award honors outstanding Lions or community members who perform exemplary service to their communities.  this year the Lansing Lions honored three non-Lions, Gene Tobey, Kathy Miller, and Karen Bishop.

Tobey and Bishop were unable to attend, but Lions Club President Debbie Mann said they would be presented with the awards later in the week.  Clubs donate $250 to the Uplinger Foundation in order to nominate a recipient.  The foundation uses the money to award grants for humanitarian service, vocational assistance, operational needs, and emergency aid.

"This person is very, very helpful to us during the chicken barbecue," Mann said of Tobey.  "He comes early and helps set up.  he was the runner while we were serving, and he stays 'till the end to clean up.  I know he was also very helpful during our pancake breakfast."

"I've always enjoyed talking to Kathy Miller during the pancake breakfast," Mann continued.  "I checked her out online today and boy, there's a lot of information about her.  She's chairman of the Town Center Committee.  She was elected to the Town Board last year.  She is an active voice in protecting the town from the perils of fracking.  And at last week's Democratic caucus she was voted the Democratic candidate for Lansing Town Supervisor.  I noticed in one of her quotes that she stressed the importance of putting in the time and work for the job that she'll be running for and that she is willing to do that because she feels it is so important.  That certainly goes along with our motto of Lionism and our motto, 'We Serve'."

"Karen Bishop visited our Lions meeting and gave a talk about flu season," Mann said.  "She answered a lot of health questions for us.  I also checked her out online and there is a lot about her and the different health topics she has spoken about.  She is the community health nurse supervisor who worked out of the Tompkins County Health Department."

Lion Noni Krom was honored as 'Lion of the Year' as well.
