unitedwayUnited Way of Tompkins County announced its 2011/12 Campaign goal at the Annual Stephen E. Garner Day of Caring on Tuesday, September 20th at Stewart Park.  Celebratory events started this past weekend with the 5th Annual A Cappella United concert held on Friday at Cornell. Community members, homecoming participants, and students enjoyed performances by Cornell A Cappella groups including special guest Cornelian Dylan.

United Way of Tompkins County Community Campaign Chairs, John & Mary Gutenberger and Nancy Fuhr Bonn & Fred Bonn announced a goal of $2,151,000. Campaign gifts support local health and human services and programs.  Community Care Fund gifts support seven issue areas: Basic Needs, Child Care/Early Learning, Crisis Services, Financial Stability/Building Self-Sufficiency, Health/Environment, Seniors, and Youth. The campaign concludes in the first quarter of next year.

“United Way of Tompkins County is commemorating its 90th anniversary. This hallmark has helped generations of people thanks to the generous support of so many over the years. Our campaign is off to a great start and we are very encouraged by the results that are coming in from our Pacesetter Campaign businesses and organizations,” said Campaign Chairs John & Mary Gutenberger and Nancy Fuhr Bonn & Fred Bonn.  Numerous former UWTC volunteers were in attendance for the 12:00 Noon Program.

Corporate Cornerstone Partners fund the organization's administrative and operating expenses, enabling every dollar raised in the campaign to go directly back into the community by funding needed health and human services and programs.

This year marks the 15th Annual Day of Caring and 9th Food & Personal Care Items Drive. This year donations were also accepted for flood relief efforts in the region.  Day of Caring donations were given to local food pantries and community organizations for distribution throughout Tompkins County. Flood relief donations were given to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier for distribution to areas impacted by the recent severe flooding.

As part of UWTC’s Student & Campus Engagement initiative, students from TC3, Ithaca College, and Cornell University conducted their 2nd Annual Stuff the Bus for School Supplies Drive on their respective campuses this past week leading up to the Day of Caring. Gadabout Transportation Services partnered with UWTC for this 2nd drive by providing a bus on the campuses to collect donations. All donated items will be distributed to schools in Tompkins County.
