Monroe Payne, Section Chair for the Finger Lakes Section, presented the minutes from the first meeting of the Geneva Section, as it was originally named, published in Wilson’s Photographic Magazine, March 1911. While acknowledging the similarities between the founders of the Section and todays members, Payne also pointed out the changes that one hundred years has brought to the photography industry; most notable of these being the importance and complexity of digitized imagery today.
As Payne questions, “where will the next hundred years lead us?” He listed many aspects about photography that have not changed; natural light, people, rules and techniques of composition are universal and timeless.
“Our function remains the same; to capture our clients as their true selves, but at their very best, in a manner and of a quality that only professionals can do,” says Payne. “The friendship and mentoring that exist within our profession will continue to push us and force us to become even better at our craft.”
