johnschafer120John Schafer, of Lansing High School, has been awarded the HOBY Youth Leadership Award for 2012. One sophomore student is selected each year based an essay written to the topic of: "What is the most rewarding and challenging aspect of being a leader in your school and community?"

John will attend a conference held at SUNY Oswego the first weekend in June; the purpose of the conference is to provide students who have demonstrated leadership ability with the opportunity to interact with and learn from groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education, and the professions.

HOBY's widely acclaimed international program began in 1958 when actor Hugh O'Brian returned from Africa, inspired by a nine-day visit spent working and talking with Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize Winner. Two weeks after his return to the US, O'Brian, who was portraying legendary lawman Wyatt Earp on television, decided to make his own contribution to society by establishing HOBY. He chose youth leadership as the most promising enterprise that HOBY could promote.

The leadership seminars consist of question-and-answer sessions, small group discussions, and leadership exercises, which assist these future leaders to better understand the meaning of leadership and begin to identify their own particular leadership strengths.
