 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I want to make a sizeable donation to a local church in memory of my mom, but I want it for a specific project. Can I stipulate that my donation be directed toward a specific project?

Thanks,

Monica

Dear Monica,

When you make a donation to any organization, you have the right to designate your monies to a specific project within the agency. The organization to which you are making your donation must honor your request or provide an explanation as to how the monies will be spent. If you do not like their policy, then you are free to direct your monies elsewhere.

Before you write out the check, contact the pastor or church council president and inform them that your donation is for a specific fund or project. If they give you a verbal guarantee that your money will be used solely for your specific request, then send them your donation with a note that indicates your request and the verbal guarantee you received over the phone.
