communitycenter_extSupervisor Kathy Miller asked the Town Board to consider renovations to the Lansing Community Center at Wednesday's Town Board meeting.  Miller said that making the building more usable will help relieve room scheduling issues at the town hall, and that the Lansing Lions Club and Boy Scouts have volunteered to be part of the project.

"We haven't put any money into this building for 25 years," she said.  "It's needed.  It actually is a historical building."

Miller said that when the community center is updated exercise groups will be asked to move from the town courtroom to the community center.

"We're finding that we're having more and more meetings here and then trying to find space for them," Miller said.  "We can't meet because people here are doing exercise."

The issue arose because a group that wanted to use the kitchen was denied, because the stove is too dangerous.  She said that volunteer labor and highway department labor during slower work periods will save money.  She said the town has a repair and renovation fund for town assets that currently has $100,000.  Building Inspector Lynn Day estimates that the renovations will cost about $15,000, and Miller asked the Town Board to consider using that amount.

One of the more costly parts of that is a 'gym coat' floor treatment that Miller said is very expensive.  The Lansing School District has agreed to let Day borrow a floor sander this summer to sand the floors to prepare them for the treatment.  The floor treatment uses acrylic hybrid polymers to provide a thick clear gloss.  Miller said it will protect the floors and make them easier to clean, which she said will be especially important upstairs where the Lansing Drop-In Center meets.

The Boy Scouts have agreed to paint the building with paint that will be paid for by the Lansing Lions Club.  The Lions has also agreed to purchase a new stove for the facility.  Both groups make regular use of the community center for meetings, the Boy Scouts' can and bottle drive and Halloween haunted house, and for the Lions' pancake breakfasts.

The Highway Department will remodel the bathrooms during slow work periods next winter.  Miller said that the ladies room in particular needs work.  She says some bathroom space will be used to store tables and chairs.
