golf_1An Ace was made Monday, June 18, at the Ithaca YMCA Kionix Kids to Camp Golf Outing.  The event commands both courses, the Country Club of Ithaca and Cornell’s Robert Trent Jones, for a field of 140 players. This event has been conducted in collaboration with Kionix for the past 6 years and has become one of the leading golf outings in Tompkins County and beyond. Over 30 different organizations also sponsored the event, and 140 prizes were provided for the players.

Golfers can play all their lives and never get a ‘hole in one’. The Y’s event has continued for 20 years, with an average of 120 players per year, yet this was the first time the event has had an Ace! The Ace was made on Cornell’s number 5 hole with a drive of 141 yards over the pond. The winning shot was made by Chris Dhionis, special guest of Kionix Inc, traveling from Massachusetts to attend our tournament. Chris will receive a set of deluxe golf clubs awarded through The National Hole in One Association.

This year’s event included a special guest speaker Andy Iles, Cornell Hockey team goalie who spoke about Youth Development and character building through sports programming.

The event takes place each year, currently celebrating its 20 year anniversary, as a fundraiser to provide scholarships for children to attend the Y’s Summer Camp program. Camp Adventure is a 52 year old day camp program providing children with traditional camping experience and outdoor adventure programming like shelter building, plant identification, orienteering, fire starting, and survival skills in the woods. The program utilizes the YMCA facility on Graham Rd and the wooded adventure land on Mecklenburg Rd.

All programs operated by the Y are focused on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. CEO, Frank Towner, states that all children are guided by trained staff that will foster these ideals and will provide the children with the knowledge to become healthy, productive, and responsible citizens.
