"Exercise classes are during the day and frequently at times when we need the courtroom for meetings," Miller says. "I've already heard from people that when it's done they are going to use it more. They're looking forward to having something they can use, especially the kitchen. So I think it's well worth doing."
The kitchen has been gutted by the Lansing Lions Club, who are also donating a new stove. Stainless steel wall plates will be installed behind the cooking area, and appliances will be reinstalled. The Lions are the primary users of the kitchen for their popular pancake breakfasts. Miller anticipates more groups will use it when the work is completed.
Lansing Boy Scouts Troop 48 has agreed to paint the building with paint that will be paid for by the Lansing Lions Club. The troop also makes extensive use of the building for their can and bottle drive, Halloween Haunted House, and other events.
Demolition on the bathrooms has also begun. Bathrooms are being reworked, with one to be handicapped accessible. The floors are being refinished in the main rooms upstairs and downstairs, vents are being walled in and electrical hidden in the downstairs main room, which will be painted after storage closets and a coat rack are added. A 'gym coat' floor treatment will be used to make the floors more attractive and durable.
The town maintains a repair and renovation fund for town assets that currently has over $100,000. In mid-May the Town Board approved $15,000 from that fund for the Community Center project. All the money will go into materials with Day and volunteers providing the labor.
