Mayor Svante Myrick officially threw his hat in the ring on Monday, March 11th, and will be running in the Tough Turtle race with the “City Haulers” on April 20th. The City Haulers consist of Mayor Myrick, Amy Ross and Tammy Lopez of Cornell University’s Facilities Operations, Nikolas Lopez, a local student and Ithaca resident and Ray Weaver of Cornell Cooperative Extension. Their goal is to raise $1,000 that will benefit the Ithaca Children’s Garden. “This is a great cause and a really fun way to raise money for a local landmark,” says Weaver.

The Ithaca Children’s Garden’s Executive Director, Erin Marteal, developed the idea for a 5K Obstacle Course in Ithaca.

Marteal stated, “It was an idea that I thought could work here in Ithaca. These types of events have been growing in popularity over the past few years. Why shouldn’t we have one here in Ithaca, with some local flair?”

All 600 spaces for the event sold out in less than 24 hours, and an additional 150 people have been waitlisted.

“It was definitely a shock to see registration fill up that fast. Our only form of marketing was word-of-mouth and a Facebook page,” said Weaver, who is also the Public Relations Coordinator for the event. “Our next step is to support the racers who have chosen to fundraise for the event. Racers had the option to register with a flat fee or as a fundraiser. If they don’t meet their fundraising goal, they will not be able to participate in the event.”
