groton deforesttoddThis spring, Alyssa DeForrest and Kayla Todd, 4th grade students from Groton Elementary, completed a very special art piece designed to lift the spirits of visitors to the new Cancer Community Room at Cortland Regional Memorial Hospital’s Cancer Resource Center. Fourth grade art teacher Julianne Costa, as well as other area art teachers, were contacted by CRMC for this very special project. Teachers were asked to facilitate the creation of artwork that would be uplifting and colorful.

Julianne Costa said, “I immediatly thought of Alyssa and Kayla based on their merit in my class and their enthusiasm for always wanting to go above and beyond… They worked on this project every day for about a month.”

Since Ms. Costa’s art class was currently working on a 'Keep Calm' theme, the students used the theme 'Keep Calm to Kick Cancer'. Using vibrant colors and a quilt-like block pattern, the final product looks modern and fresh. The piece was revealed at the Cancer Resource Center’s Open House, during a reception for the artists held from 6:00-7:00 pm on June 1, 2015.

sc Sciencenter175The Sciencenter launched the public phase of a multi-year, $3.8 million capital campaign last week that will expand and enhance nearly all of the museum's exhibits and educational programs. The Campaign: Curious. Confident. Inspired., will provide the support the museum needs to foster science learning at each major developmental stage – from toddlers, through elementary school, to the teen years. Through enhanced exhibit experiences, new and expanded programs, facility upgrades, and an endowment for sustainability, each of the museum's three age-based initiatives will receive support through the campaign.

"We want every young person to appreciate the power of science and how it will shape the world they will soon inherit," said Charlie Trautmann, Executive Director of the Sciencenter. "We are replacing or reinventing nearly all of our exhibits – indoors and out. We are expanding our educational efforts and moving a few walls to better support our programs.  And we are removing financial barriers, so that the Sciencenter will be accessible to everyone in our community."

"Woodsedge is at full occupancy," she told the Lansing Town Board.  "One bedroom apartments have a waiting list of 20 potential tenants, and six are waiting for two-bedroom apartments.  Don't let that throw you off.  They like to maintain a waiting list of at least 13 people for one-bedroom apartments and three for two-bedrooms."

YMCA NewRoots120The Tompkins County YMCA teamed up with New Roots Charter School to offer week-long intensive courses that can result in American Red Cross certifications.  In late May six students received their American Red Cross Lifeguard certification course after spending a week in the pool with YMCA employee and American Red Cross instructor Ryan Allen learning lifesaving techniques and rescues as well as CPR and First Aid.

"These skills have helped me get a jump on my future. Now I have more opportunities to get a job at a pool this summer, maybe even at the YMCA!" says Ella Bard, a senior at New Roots who took the course.  "I now feel more accomplished and prepared for emergencies when and if they happen," says Shannon Raymond, a junior at New Roots.

"I've gotten to see many of them as their principal at the elementary school," she said.  "They are great educators.  There are a lot of things we've been focussing on in the last couple of years: the 'Love Your People' campaign, and 'Caring and Kindness In Our Schools'.  The people here really embody that."

Yeti Hello! My name is Yeti, but I'm much friendlier than your common abominable snowman! I was surrendered to the SPCA when I tested positive for FIV. Due to this condition, I will need to be an indoor-only cat with no other cats (unless they are also FIV positive). If I'm kept healthy, I can live just as long as a cat without FIV. I love to be brushed, and with this coat, I need it! I also love sitting in laps and being carried around. I am neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. Perhaps your home is in need of a loving snow monster? If so, I'm your man!
