posticon SPCA Pet of the Week - James

Print Print

DagobertJames is a very handsome pup who loves to play and go for walks. He still needs quite a bit of training, but plans on graduating with honors from a basic obedience training class! James has attended a puppy class at the shelter and would benefit from more socialization with other puppies. He even comes with one free class if you take him home! He is food motivated, meaning a patient owner would be able to train him to do a bunch of tricks! Because he can be a bit mouthy, James should go home with middle school-aged children or older. Please consider taking this sweet boy home today and help him become the best dog he can be!

school lhs 120Lansing High School student Emary Iocobucci and 3rd grader Ella made a pitch at Wednesday's Board Of Education meeting to garner support for diabetes research.  November is National Diabetes Month.  Ella asked for support for the Raymond C. Buckley Elementary School Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes.  Iocabucci asked for a lot of social media 'noise' to raise awareness with a 'Thunderclap' on Facebook and twitter.  Here is her letter explaining why everyone should participate in this free effort:

I'm writing in regards to a Type 1 Diabetes awareness event on November 1st.  Before I get into the event, I'd like you all to know why it's important to be aware of T1D. According to JDRF, as many as three million Americans may have T1D, and each year 15,000 children are diagnosed in the U.S. The prevalence of T1D in Americans under age 20 rose by 23% between 2001 and 2009. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic limb amputations, and blindness in the U.S. The risk of death in a person with T1D is statistically twice as high as someone without it in the same age group.

posticon Lansing Food Waste Drop Spot Opens

foodscraps 120When garbage tags were introduced recycling was meant to take some of the sting out of the added expense by removing a lot of the weight from our trash cans.  A year ago a food scraps recycling program was instituted.   Saturday a new food scraps drop spot was opened in the Village of Lansing.  The Tompkins County Solid Waste Division has set a goal of 75% waste diversion from the landfill by the end of 2016.  They have reached about 60% so far.

"A lot of it is through recycling," says Waste Reduction and Recycling Specialist Kat McCarthy.  "Some is from reuse, and then there is food scrap recycling that we're really amping up with.  I think  food scraps recycling is going to help us get closer to that goal."

posticon SPCA Pet of the Week - Binks

Print Print

BinksPoor Binks, one of our most handsome black kitties, was found abandoned at a home in Lansing. Despite this neglect, he loves people and hopes to be someone’s new loyal companion. When you sit down, he’ll approach you with a head butt and soft meow. If you're having a bad day, he’ll sit next to you and share some purrs with you. If you're excited, he’ll run around and play too! At two years young, Binks has a full lifetime to be your best friend. Although he was diagnosed with FIV, he will live a completely normal life, other than the fact that he will need to be an indoor only kitty and should be the only feline in the home. However, if you have an FIV positive cat already in your home, that would work out just fine! Come spend some time with him, fall in love like the rest of us have, and offer him a second chance at life – he deserves it!

posticon SPCA Pet of the Week - Lee Lee

Print Print

LeeLeeWhile Lee Lee came to the shelter a very fearful dog, she has blossomed with a little help from our behavior team and is starting to come out of her shell. Lee Lee has a lot of terrier energy, so is seeking an active adopter who can provide lots of healthy outlets, including high energy activities. While she didn't know what to do with a toy when she got here, she is quickly developing an addiction to chasing balls around the play yard with brief breaks to splash around in our kiddie pools. Lee Lee is working hard on learning nice manners and would love an adopter who is experienced and committed to providing her with continuing education. Because of her size and energy level, we are looking to place Lee Lee in an adult only home where she will be the only pet.
