foodandwine120Apples are coming! Apples are coming! As August passes into history, September is arriving and you can hear apple lovers all over central New York rejoicing. It's apple season at last. In honor of this healthy and versatile fruit, I'd like to discuss a few of its more interesting features.

Let's start with some good health news. An apple a day really is a good idea. The average apple has about 100 calories and contains about five grams of cholesterol lowering fiber, the equivalent of about 20% of the recommended daily minimum. Apples can also help your metabolism, assist in weight loss, and might even prevent bronchitis and some cancers. Studies have shown that postmenopausal women who ate dried apples daily reduced their LDL cholesterol by more than 23% within 6 months.

wells_ryerson(Aurora, NY) President Lisa Marsh Ryerson has announced that she will retire from the presidency of Wells College. While she will conclude her active term as President at the end of this academic year, she will remain with the College for a sabbatical year in which she will work with the Board of Trustees on key institutional initiatives.

For Ms. Marsh Ryerson this marks the culmination of a 28-year professional career at Wells. After graduating cum laude with a major in English in 1981, she served as the College’s assistant director of admissions and associate dean of students before completing her master’s degree at the State University of New York at Cortland and four years teaching public school. Ms. Marsh Ryerson returned to Wells in 1991 to serve as dean of students, executive vice president and acting president before the Board appointed her to the presidency in 1995.

wells_deanofstudents120Aurora, New York—Wells College recently announced the addition of Jennifer Michael to the Academic and Student Life Division as the College’s new dean of students. As a member of the College’s senior staff, Dean Michael will be overseeing the student activities and residence life offices as well as the College’s chaplaincy, supporting and assisting students as they complete their educations.

Dean Michael assumed her role in July and directed much of the preparations for the return of Wells’ students this fall and the arrival of the class of 2016, a class larger than any the College has seen in more than four decades. “I’m enjoying orientation, because I—as well as the first-year class—have a chance to learn a lot about the school through the process. Students are what give a college energy and life, and I function best with that energy around me.”

libertytree_120The Lansing-Ithaca Rotary Club dedicated a Liberty Elm Tree Saturday in front of the log cabin in Myers Park.  The elm is the first of what Rotarians hope will be a series of shade tree donations, as well as providing a reminder of Boston's Liberty Tree, which symbolized liberty and resistance to the British Crown in the events leading up to the Revolutionary War.

"If this bit of history does well we'll plant many more here in Myers Park," said Rotarian Jase Baese.  "It will make a more diverse ecosystem and more lovely shade trees for all the residents of Lansing to enjoy."

posticon It's Not Easy Being a Chicken In Lansing

Print Print

bakercup_120Most people are happy to live in Lansing.  But it doesn't pay to be a chicken here, because of the huge popularity of chicken barbecues.  Many of Lansing's weekly barbecues use the famous and popular Cornell Sauce.  What you may not know is that sauce was developed by Lansing's own Bob Baker.  Baker passed away in 2006, but Lansing continues to celebrate him with the Baker Cup Chicken Barbecue Contest at the Lansing Harbor Festival.

"He'd love it.  He would love all the different ways to make the chicken," says Baker's daughter, Reenie Baker Sandsted, one of Baker's seven children.  That's what he was all about, using chicken in different ways.  He'd love this artistic way they're doing it today.  He'd be very pleased with it.  He was all about that.

fd_hose120Adele O’Rourke, 18, of Ithaca was one of 22 young women from the U.S. and Canada who graduated from the 6th annual Phoenix Firecamp, a weeklong overnight camp in Utica, NY that is designed to introduce teenage girls to the opportunities for women in fire and emergency services. The daughter of  Patricia Anne and Dr. Thomas O’Rourke, she attends Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Adele is a member of the Cayuga Heights Fire Department.

The nationally recognized program, conducted by Fire Service Women of New York State, Inc.(FSWNYS), was the first of its kind in the Northeastern US and remains one of the few nationwide. Camp Director Lt. Anna Schermerhorn-Collins (FDNY) said this year’s campers were the most diverse group since the program began in 2007; to date there are 119 graduates.“We had three young women who are members of volunteer fire departments, nine from Explorer Posts, three with limited EMS training and the other seven had no prior exposure to fire and emergency services.”

posticon Food and Wine - Nuts!

Print Print

foodandwine120'Everything in moderation.' Have you heard that before?  Well it’s particularly true when we think about eating nuts.  Nuts, in moderation, are good for us, but if we mindlessly shovel them into our mouths, we could easily risk obesity and heart disease by ingesting too many calories and too much harmful fat.

Since I’ve introduced moderation into your consciousness, we should all be on the same page as to what constitutes a healthy serving of nuts.  Since nuts have between 160 and 200 calories per ounce, (assuming you’re not a glutton who needs to have them covered with sugar, chocolate or honey), a normal daily serving is about an ounce.  But how can we easily determine how many nuts are in an ounce?   Good news.  I’ve done some research for you and am about to share that information with you.

posticon Ay Chihuahua! SPCA Saves LA Small Dogs

spcasmalldogsThe SPCA of Tompkins County, in partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, has taken in 20 Chihuahua mixes and other small mixed breed dogs, who originated at municipal shelters in Los Angeles California and were scheduled for euthanasia.

The SPCA received a call from Best Friends Animal Society, based in Utah, to ask if the SPCA would consider taking a transport of dogs who were going to be euthanized.  After nearly two months of logistics and planning, and an overnight drive to and from JFK, the SPCA was able to save 20 small (highly adoptable) dogs from Los Angeles. Los Angeles is still a traditional shelter city where dogs are regularly put down for no other reason than space.
