Apples are coming! Apples are coming! As August passes into history, September is arriving and you can hear apple lovers all over central New York rejoicing. It's apple season at last. In honor of this healthy and versatile fruit, I'd like to discuss a few of its more interesting features. Let's start with some good health news. An apple a day really is a good idea. The average apple has about 100 calories and contains about five grams of cholesterol lowering fiber, the equivalent of about 20% of the recommended daily minimum. Apples can also help your metabolism, assist in weight loss, and might even prevent bronchitis and some cancers. Studies have shown that postmenopausal women who ate dried apples daily reduced their LDL cholesterol by more than 23% within 6 months.



(Aurora, NY) President Lisa Marsh Ryerson has announced that she will retire from the presidency of Wells College. While she will conclude her active term as President at the end of this academic year, she will remain with the College for a sabbatical year in which she will work with the Board of Trustees on key institutional initiatives.

Aurora, New York—Wells College recently announced the addition of Jennifer Michael to the Academic and Student Life Division as the College’s new dean of students. As a member of the College’s senior staff, Dean Michael will be overseeing the student activities and residence life offices as well as the College’s chaplaincy, supporting and assisting students as they complete their educations.
The Lansing-Ithaca Rotary Club dedicated a Liberty Elm Tree Saturday in front of the log cabin in Myers Park. The elm is the first of what Rotarians hope will be a series of shade tree donations, as well as providing a reminder of Boston's Liberty Tree, which symbolized liberty and resistance to the British Crown in the events leading up to the Revolutionary War.
Most people are happy to live in Lansing. But it doesn't pay to be a chicken here, because of the huge popularity of chicken barbecues. Many of Lansing's weekly barbecues use the famous and popular Cornell Sauce. What you may not know is that sauce was developed by Lansing's own Bob Baker. Baker passed away in 2006, but Lansing continues to celebrate him with the Baker Cup Chicken Barbecue Contest at the Lansing Harbor Festival.

Adele O’Rourke, 18, of Ithaca was one of 22 young women from the U.S. and Canada who graduated from the 6th annual Phoenix Firecamp, a weeklong overnight camp in Utica, NY that is designed to introduce teenage girls to the opportunities for women in fire and emergency services. The daughter of Patricia Anne and Dr. Thomas O’Rourke, she attends Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Adele is a member of the Cayuga Heights Fire Department.
The SPCA of Tompkins County, in partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, has taken in 20 Chihuahua mixes and other small mixed breed dogs, who originated at municipal shelters in Los Angeles California and were scheduled for euthanasia.
