Thursday (May 17th) marked a very special day for Lansing High School SADD.  Every three years SADD puts on a mock car crash.  The event that lasts only about fifty minutes actually involves months of planning and dozens of people from the community that volunteer their time.  The realistic enactment ends up with some students being carried off in body bags while a grieving mother wails, and the drunk driver who caused the accident being led off in handcuffs.

esfota2010_120The place to be in Lansing tonight (Friday, May 10th) is the East Shore Festival Of The Arts (ESFOTA) opening at the Lansing Town Hall.  The show features 40 local artists whose work will be on display in the Town Hall and the Lansing Community Library today through July 21.  It's the third annual exhibit.  Organizer Robin Schuttenberg says that each year the show adds new features.

"One of the things that is fascinating this year is to see the change in the work of artists who have been in the show before from one year to the next," she says.  "Mary Schuler has some interesting work this year, and Michael Wills, and Karen Veaner's work is totally different than it was last year."

posticon Food and Wine - Whole Grains

Print Print

foodandwine120I’ll bet you didn’t do what I did this morning!  And it makes me a bit sad that you didn’t because you would have A) enjoyed it and B) improved your health. The rest of my good news is that it didn’t take me long to do it, it wasn’t difficult, and it didn’t cost much.

So what did I do?  I made myself some cereal from the grain that is the richest source of protein of any grain grown. That’s because it’s the most complete, containing all nine essential amino acids, a combination that is difficult to find in the plant kingdom. It’s naturally gluten free, easy to digest, and loaded with iron, copper, phosphorous, manganese and vitamin B2.  And it’s very high in magnesium which helps relax blood vessels meaning it probably helps to reduce the number and severity of headaches while it lowers the risk of hypertension and stroke.

911A house fire in Dryden, a car accident in Danby, and a police stand-off in Ithaca--all at the same time.  The proper delivery of vital, life-saving information in a matter of minutes for all of these events happens at the Tompkins County 911 Center: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 (or even 366) days a year.

Each April, we recognize the unsung heroes who work in 911 centers across America with National Telecommunicators Week; proclaimed by Congress in 1991.  This month, Tompkins County is building upon that opportunity to honor its dedicated team of professional emergency dispatchers.

pills_120The Coalition for Safe Medication Disposal reports that its fifth event, on April 28, eclipsed previous records. Most notably, the previous attendance record of 509 people was smashed, with participation at Saturday's event totaling 686 people at three collection locations: Ithaca, Groton, and Slaterville Springs.

"The number of participants was very impressive," says Coalition chair Ed Gottlieb, "It is particularly notable considering that the previous record was accomplished in six hours, and the new record was achieved in only four hours."

pathway_120Members of the Lansing Pathways Committee presented to the Town Board Wednesday to explain what they have accomplished so far and what they hope to achieve.  Deborah Trumbull presented a PowerPoint presentation the committee plans to use in a community outreach effort.  The committee's most tangible accomplishment to date is the Lansing Center Trail and a new brochure that explains it.  A downloadable copy of the brochure is posted on the Town Web site.

Trumbull noted that 73% of respondents to a 1990s survey said they would use walking trails if they were available.  Pedestrian pathways have also been a major factor in Town center planning in Lansing.
