star_120Tompkins County, in a unique partnership with EcoVillage at Ithaca's Center for Sustainability Education, has been awarded a $375,450 federal grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to fund innovative on-the-ground approaches to creating dense neighborhoods that enhance residents quality of life while using fewer resources.

"This is great news for Tompkins County," U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said. "Leaders in Tompkins County are helping to lead the way on initiatives to cut pollution, improve the air we breathe and the water we drink. I will keep working to help secure the resources New York needs to address climate change, free us from the dirty foreign fuels of the last century, and produce the clean energy of the 21st century right here in New York."

posticon Building Jobs Support Affordable, Green Housing

cbwi_120How many times have we heard complaints about un-handy handymen or fix-it folks who broke more than they repaired?  They're usually uninsured, and seemingly don't care about their reputation.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a construction company that did great work on small jobs, with super-qualified workers, for a very reasonable price?  Wouldn't it be nice to know they have a solid gold reputation in the community, and that all their workers are not only fully-insured, they also have health insurance?  Wouldn't it be extra-great if they were green-oriented builders who could give me the best latest advice on energy conservation and green products and practices?

posticon Night of Life Benefits Cancer Kids

school_high120April Fool's Day may be a day of silliness for some people, but one Lansing High School senior has decided to mix fun with a serious purpose tonight.  Senior Class President Nina Lindberg is heading up a seven-hour event called 'Night of Life' that will benefit Camp Good Days, a camp for children who are battling cancer.

"I think every family has someone who is affected," Lindberg says.  "A lot of families are hit by cancer.  I've had two grandparents pass away from cancer and friends who currently have it or have suffered from cancer.  While they haven't attended Camp Good Days I wish that they had been able to.  That's why this money that will help kids pay tuition to go to Camp Good Days is a great thing.  Even if we only help two kids go it will still make a huge difference."
