spca_coon1On May 23, 2010, “Summer”, a stray coonhound, was picked up by a Tompkins County Animal Control officers, a division of the SPCA.  She was found wandering in the Ulysses area with no collar or identification.  Staff were unable to locate Summer’s owner and after the state mandated five-day hold period expired, she was placed in the shelter’s adoption center.

For four months, the SPCA cared for Summer. She was well-behaved, enjoyed daily walks with volunteers, and was treated for eye and skin problems. She was also provided with plenty of healthy food, vaccinations and other preventative medicines while the search was on for a new home.

cat_welcome120The Whispering Pines community in Lansing was the setting for Family and Children's Service of Ithaca's 13th annual Cayuga at Twilight, where almost 300 guests toured five homes, each with food, wine, art, and music donated by Ithaca businesses.

Ithaca, NY September 16, 2010 -- Each year Cayuga at Twilight is held in a different neighborhood, where homeowners open their doors to welcome party goers who walk from residence to residence sampling food and wine donated by local restaurants and wineries. Musicians and florists also donate their time and craft to add atmosphere to the evening. This year art was displayed for sale, with a portion of the purchase price benefiting Family and Children's Service of Ithaca (F&CS). In addition, each of the five artists donated a work, raffled at the final home and Tauck World Discovery raffled a European trip for two. Cayuga at Twilight guests also enjoyed sitting for an on the spot portrait by caricaturist Dino DiArtist.

posticon Text Book Sticker Shock Doesn’t Have To Be So Shocking

dinapoli_120Most families know how daunting the cost of college is.  But every year around this time, college students face another sticker shock: the cost of college textbooks.  New York college students in the state university (SUNY) and city university (CUNY) systems can expect to pay as much as $4,000 or more for textbooks over the course of a four-year degree program.  That’s enough to price some students right out of a college education.

Last year I released a report on text book pricing that highlighted the savings students could realize through alternative methods for purchasing college textbooks.  The report found that at a sample of SUNY and CUNY campuses, students could save an average of $245 a semester by buying books on-line.  A first semester 2009 freshman sociology major at SUNY Binghamton would have spent $690.65 on textbooks at the campus bookstore, but only $413.85 online. Other academic majors could save even more.

posticon Cookies Aren't All that's Changing For Local Girl Scouts

gscouts_120Girl Scout cookies are one of the happiest parts of everyone's year.  In Tompkins County Girl Scouts go from door to door, and can be seen on the side of streets, in parking lots, and at the mall selling crates of cookies.  With big changes to the structure of the Girl Scouts from the national level on down to local councils, Girl Scout Cookies will be changing in the Ithaca area, as well.  Local girls will be selling cookies from Little Brownie Bakers instead of the ABC Bakers cookies they have been selling.  And while they will be selling cookies this Fall, starting next year cookie sales are moving to winter.

"This is our last fall selling cookies in this area," says Lansing troop leader Terrisue Krogh.  "This is a big change for the girls and the leaders."

posticon Continued Delays Push Back Fire Station Expansion

fdaddtn_120Fire Commissioner Jeff Walters reported that a 2.3 million addition and renovation of Lansing Central Fire Station continues to be delayed by incomplete paperwork and red tape.  Walters says the project, which was approved by voters last September, is now waiting for the district's attorney to review the first part of the contract, and for a letter from the Town of Lansing.

Originally district officials hoped to put the project out to bid in January.  By March frustrated Fire Commissioners said they hoped construction could start on July 1st.  But on Tuesday Walters said he has told the architect that he wants the project to go out to bid no later than the first week of October.

posticon Library Garden Will Enhance Programming

Print Print

lclgarden_120Garden plan by The Plantsmen NurseryVolunteers take a lot of pride in the Lansing Community Library.  Before the library was chartered they raised private donations for two capital improvement projects that expanded the indoor space, and added many features like a children's reading room, a spacious lobby and office area, and an art gallery/meeting room.  Individuals like Katrina Binkewicz, various scouts and others worked on plantings, and in 2006 Mark Baily designed and executed a reading garden on the northwest side.  Last Saturday a dozen volunteers could be seen creating a large garden with a variety of plants, walkways, and a fence.

"They aren't all native plants, but by far the majority are," says Suzanne Hinderliter, who has been part of the Friends of the Library since the beginning.  "We purposefully tried to do that.  We have a lot of variety.  For instance we have a lot of grasses, but they aren't all the same species.   Our hope is that we can incorporate some nature programming that we don't do now.  We want to involve children or families."
