dnaSheriff Peter Meskill announced Monday that the Tompkins County Sheriff's Department has received a $10,000 grant that will pay for training on how to collect DNA evidence as well as collection kits.  The Byrne JAG (Justice Assistance Grant) grant is part of a federal program that supports local law enforcement agencies, courts, corrections departments with training, planning, and innovation.  Meskill  says that the enhanced training and evidence kits the grant provides will go hand in hand with neighborhood watch programs to solve home and business burglaries.

"It's a great advantage for us to help us take a better look and a better approach to solving burglaries using modern techniques that are available," Meskill says.  "This grant is designed to help us learn how to properly collect DNA evidence and save it.  We have education and training for other evidence collection procedures all the time, but this is specific to DNA collection.  It will help us to understand what to look for, how to collect it, how to store it, and what to do with it.  In addition the grant helps pay for training classes and DNA evidence collection kits."

nozzolio_120In recognition of his efforts to support job growth, lower taxes and economic development in Upstate New York, State Senator Mike Nozzolio has been named one of Unshackle Upstate’s top ten Senators for the 2010 legislative session.  Nozzolio also received a perfect grading from Unshackle Upstate on his advocacy for taxpayers during the State budget process. The ranking comes as part of Unshackle Upstate’s “Judgment Day” campaign to identify which State legislators acted in the best interests of Upstate New York's taxpayers and job creators.

“It is an honor to be recognized by an organization that shares my strong commitment to creating a better future for our taxpayers and job-creating businesses,” said Nozzolio. “The past two years have been a time of tremendous frustration for the residents of our region, but I am more determined than ever to change the way State government operates. I will continue working aggressively with Unshackle Upstate to reduce taxes and fees, cap property taxes, cut State spending and abolish unfunded mandates.”

North Log CabinDescendants of the original builder go into the cabinIt's been more than two years since the North Log Cabin came home to Lansing, where it was originally built more than 200 years ago.  Saturday two of the descendants of Thomas North, a Revolutionary War veteran who originally built the cabin, came to see their ancestral home and be a part of a ribbon cutting for the restored structure.

"I've known about it most of my life," said Jane Ellen North Bryce, North's Great Great Great Great Granddaughter.  "My parents came out here in 1975 and saw it when it was at the Cayuga Museum.  I believe my uncle Arvide came to see it, too.  I have some newspaper articles about it that were published in 1958."

posticon Mira’s Mediterranean Bistro

mira120Monday night. Matthew and I decided last minute to go down to the DMV mall on Third Street, Ithaca, to try out a new restaurant that we had heard about. We called for reservations and found out that Mira's Mediterranean Bistro had actually opened that day after having a soft opening over the weekend for family and friends. When I found that out, I wondered was it really fair to judge them on their food and presentation before they really had time to get the details of functioning hammered down. They were game and we were hungry for Mediterranean food since we had not been to either Aladdin's (College town), or Pita Gourmet (Cortland), in quite a while.

zstar_120American Idol junkies have been feeling a void since Lee DeWyze defeated Crystal Bowersox for the title last May.  Ithacans are getting a fix as local singers duke it out in Z95.5's second annual Z Star competition.  Last Saturday the top ten performed before a live audience at The Shops at Ithaca Mall with radio personalities Corey and Mickey V judging, celebrity judge John Rawlins III, and Z95.5's Jess filling out the roster as host.  Rawlins is last year's winner, and he was having a blast as a judge.

"I get to give tips now and help people improve their performing skills," he says.  "I get to help them to connect to the audience and give an overall outstanding performance.  It's great.  I love it"

hfcs_120When visitors enter Myers Park for the fourth annual Lansing Harbor Festival Saturday (August 14th) they will experience a great day of music, food, activities, and fun.  What many don't realize is that the festival is entirely a volunteer effort with enormous community support.  The Lansing Community Council, also made up entirely of volunteers, hosts the event that is calculated to celebrate the community and bring people together.

"I feel very supported by the community," says festival chairwoman Karen Veaner.  "Even now in these last final days before the festival when I am starting to panic about whether we'll have enough people to park the cars -- my phone is ringing with people saying 'What can I do?'"

posticon PRI Launches Oil Spill Web Site

star_120Despite the hopeful news on the 24-hour news channels, the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill are far from over. The Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) announced 'Under Siege' - a website about the threats of the oil spill on the subsurface biota of the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Keys.

"Our intent with the 'Under Siege' website and our temporary exhibit of the same name at the Museum of the Earth, is to spread awareness of the high levels of biodiversity in the Gulf that are at risk in this devastating disaster," says Dr. Paula Mikkelsen, associate director for science at the Paleontological Research Institution.  Mikkelsen has focussed her professional research around the aquatic biodiversity of these now-threatened marine organisms.
