posticon Stegosaurus Spotted in Lansing

For those of us who have been disappointed in global warming this winter, the cold spell has brought at least one unusual discovery.  This rather large frozen stegosaurus was spotted in front of the Leathers/Cundy residence in Lansing the other day.  While some scientists think dinosaurs became extinct because of a severe ice age, it is clear that this cold winter has brought at least one back.

ImageOur apologies to our readers for the lack of a column recently. Mary spent a lot of time and effort on our Mardi Gras costumes and we had a fun time even if we didn’t win. Then she went off with Tigan to visit several colleges: really an excuse to go south in March and see her long time friend, Karen French and Godson, Bryan, formerly from Lansing. Bryan and his new bride, J.J. got married at Sunset Beach, NC on New Years’ Day so this was her chance to visit and congratulate them. She also got a chance to visit with our son, Bill Steinhardt, and his wife, Julie, in DC, while Tigan looked at colleges there.

posticon SMART TALK: Mental Telepathy

by Dr. Ced Riley

MENTAL TELEPATHY:  Come on, people, would you say nasal telepathy?  Manual?  Gastro-intestinal?

Of course not, so just call it telepathy.

Some patients at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, as well as Chief Johnson of the local Underbelly, Texas, police department, say that all telepaths are mentally insane.

By saying that, they weaken their argument, since they forget that one can't be anally insane.  Unless one is very, very neat, I suppose.

It all depends on your mental attitude.

ImageThe Habitat For Humanity house on Breed Road in Lansing is scheduled to be completed before the end of next month.  While construction got off to a slow start, work on the house has been progressing through the winter to the point where Habitat officials say the family will be able to move into the house in April.

"The exterior completely finished," says Habitat for Humanity of Tompkins and Cortland Counties Board of Directors President Angela Loh.  "The dry wall is up.  What's next is the mudding, sanding, and painting.  The floors and cabinets are all waiting to be put in.  Bumblebee Painters is donating their painting services, so it will be primed and painted very quickly.  One, two, three and it's going to be done."

posticon Grimm Promotes Capital Project

Print Print

ImageLansing School Superintendent Stephen Grimm hit the road this week to tell Lansing taxpayers about the Learning, Health & Safety capital project that will be put to a vote on March 9th.  The $3.6 million building project will enhance security in the schools, replace fire alarms, improve water pressure in the elementary school, and includes major renovations to the high school.  The project is being funded with no additional tax burden on already strapped Lansing property owners.

Grimm scheduled five informational meetings.  Two were held this week at Monday's School Board meeting, and Wednesday at Linda's Diner.  Next Tuesday he'll hold a special meeting for the public at 5:30 in Lansing High School, and then he'll be off to the 6:30 PTSO meeting.  Thursday morning he'll be at the Lansing Fresh Cafe for coffee at 7am.

ImageLansing High School student Chelsea Weidman was honored at Tuesday's Tompkins County Legislature meeting.  She was named the Tompkins County Distinguished Youth for February for exemplary service to the Lansing Food Pantry.  Not only does Weidman volunteer at the food pantry, but she asks for cash and food for the pantry in lieu of birthday presents each year.  She has supported the food pantry in this way each year since moving to Lansing.  Weidman was presented to the legislator by Lansing representative Pat Pryor.

"Each year she has collected monetary and food donations at her party instead of gifts for herself," Pryor said.  "For the third time the has donated over $500 in monetary donations and hundreds of food items as well."

Out and About in the Finger LakesOut and About in the Finger Lakes
O
Mardi gras on the Cayuga Wine Trail fell on Valentines' weekend this year and, with the holiday on Monday for a lot of people, the wineries that are the starting points for the tour of all 16 were swamped the first few hours. We started at Six Mile Creek in Ithaca but quickly decided to take the back route and go up the east side of the lake to King Ferry and Long Point Wineries to avoid the tour buses. We were rewarded with a visit with Malvie and Chris at Trelaven in their elaborately decorated tasting room while Jim sipped the new Reserve Cabernet Franc.(He thoroughly enjoys "oaky, very dry" wines so that just hit the spot).

We found some great deals at Long Point and Swedish Hill along with compliments on our costumes from everyone who stopped us to have their photo taken with "The King" especially. We came down the west side to Buttonwood for one of Mary's favorites, "Blackberry Briar", to find Ken in his multicolored feather Mardi gras wig. By the time we finished chatting there we had to hurry for the competition at Americana and dinner at the Crystal Lake Caf

mp3design2_900.jpgmp3design2_900.jpgParents and children gathered at Lansing Middle School last week for the kick-off 'community celebration' of the Myers Park Playground Project (MP3).  The party featured Crossroads the Clown, the Lansing Varsity Cheerleaders, playground drawings by Lansing school children, and food.  But the centerpiece was the new playground design, which organizers hope to make a reality this June.

"It's going to cost $130,000," said Lansing Community Council President Ed LaVigne.  "Of that we have already raised $18,000 and we haven't even kicked this thing off yet!"

posticon Cornell Students Design Lansing Bridge

Print Print
Pin It
ImageWhen the Town of Lansing began managing Salt Point in 2006 the idea was to create a sister to Myers Park.  Myers would be the rambunctious sibling, with camping, parties, Harbor Festival, 4th of July Barbecue, Concerts in the Park, the playground, swimming, boating, and all manner of activities.  Salt Point would be the quiet sister, a park where you could go to meditate, watch indigenous birds, launch a non-powered boat, or watch the sun set.  From the beginning a part of the plan was a walking bridge to connect the two parks.  Because there is no intention to use tax money to build it, the bridge is a dream unless other money appears.  If it does the design and plans will be ready because of a project taken on by Cornell civil engineering students.

"We wanted to get from point A to point B," Colt says, explaining the parameters of a contest held last Fall.  "We wanted it to fit the setting.  We wanted it to be safe, top-notch construction and design.  And we wanted it so it didn't rely on being supported by anything within the water itself.  We wanted a clean span all the way across, and with enough elevation so that high water in the Spring, trees, ice would flow down and go underneath it."
