ImageThe Finger Lakes Land Trust announced Monday that it has acquired a permanent conservation easement on scenic woodlands adjacent to Cayuga Lake’s eastern shore.  Located in the Town of Lansing, the Ross/Penhollow property features 47 acres of hillside forest with 2,000 feet of frontage on the Norfolk Southern rail line, which, in turn borders Cayuga Lake.

The Ross/Penhollow property was a high priority for conservation due to the fact that it is located within a county-designated Unique Natural Area and is part of a cherished scenic vista viewed by thousands of visitors each year from Taughannock State Park.  The property features several rugged ravines as well as mature hardwood forest that supports a diversity of wildlife.

posticon A Look at New Roots: Part I

ImagePart I: Inside New Roots

The New Roots Charter School opened its doors for the first time last September.  At that time it was a promise with a lot of unknowns.  Now it is a thriving reality.

Part 1: Inside New Roots
Part 2: Building a School
Part 3: New Roots' Impact
Last year the New Roots Charter High School created a stir when it began recruiting local students.  How would it impact school districts?  How would it impact communities?  How would it impact taxes?  Less heard was the question of how it would impact kids.   The families of 107 students asked that question and decided to take a chance on the new school.  At that time all they had to go on was words and promises.  With the first trimester behind them they now have tangible experience.

"I think that it's going amazingly well, particularly considering that it is the first year," says Principal Tina Nilsen-Hodges.  "There are so many different factors at play.  We had 100 kids and their prospective families, and teachers who all showed up to make a school together.  We have a written plan.  We have launched into it and forged all kinds of new relationships, productive working relationships, partnerships with families.  We've put systems into place and refined them.  We've been working out the kinks."

posticon Cats Abandoned on Coldest Night

ImageSteve Zimmerman arrived home from his job at Gimme! Coffee about 10:00 Saturday night. The temperature was a frigid 7°. He noticed a large plastic container near the road in front of his Linn Street home. The container's top had blown off and was resting nearby. Realizing that trash and recycling pick-up was not scheduled for the next day, he investigated.

He was dismayed to find three adult cats, alive but half-frozen. He called the police and then called his friend Helen Clark - who works at the SPCA and is an experienced cat foster mom - for help. Zimmerman's neighbor, Robert Weaver, was willing to house the cats for the weekend, but worried how they would react to his dog - and vice versa.

posticon Castilian Garlic Soup by Bob T.

ImageThe three essential ingredients in this soup--garlic, bread, and water--all need to be of good quality. Do not be tempted into thinking that stock is an improvement since it masks the other flavors. Beyond that, though, you can improvise around the local variations in ingredients: lard is used rather than olive oil in Zamora, for example, and pepper seeds and chopped tomatoes are added in León.

You can also sauté the garlic first. Usually the bread is broken into small pieces so it swells into sops, but I like this fried-bread version given to me by Vale Riana, who was born in the Burgos countryside but cooked for a Madrid family for thirty years. Garlic soup was often eaten early on winter morning before going out into the bitter cold, and I really enjoy it that way.

Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the Challenge, seventh grader William Lewis earned a perfect score in the year's first meet, held in December. In the entire country only 15 seventh graders achieved perfect results. Seventh grader Kathryn Miller also earned outstanding results in the meet. The school's students were coached in preparation for the Challenge by Cathy Moseley.

posticon Troops Receive Lansing Tree

Image Moore Tree Farm in Lansing contributes trees and resources each year to the Trees for Troops initiative, which is expected to collect and deliver more than 15,000 Real Christmas Trees from across the nation to military families across the United States, as well as to soldiers serving overseas.  The Moores also work to send individual trees to troops serving in Iraq.  This year they worked with two groups from Lafayette, New York to send two real trees to Iraq.

Once the trees are shaken and baled they fit into a long cardboard shipping box that can be mailed.  Recently SFC Paul Burk shared these pictures with the Moores.  "I cannot put into words what these photos show," Kay Moore says.

ImageAfter the rush of Thanksgiving  we got a rest and a second wind and took off on our major non family event of the season, the Cayuga Wine Trail Santa visits. With Jim as the perfect Santa and Mary as Mrs. Chris Kringle (Mary, Chris’ missus; he, he, he) we started out Dec. 5 to visit our friend, Matt at Knapp winery. If you haven’t met this older rhyming gentleman, you’re in for an experience in the tasting room. He was in reindeer regalia this time and excellent holiday spirits even early in the morning. Santa Jim gave him coal to warm his puns, which he happily accepted.

We were scheduled for the afternoon at Sheldrake Winery but we wanted to have lunch first. Simply Red Bistro’s last day for the season was Dec.6th so we took the opportunity to have one more round of their amazing steak sandwich, best served with sweet potato fries, mushrooms and caramelized onions; rare thank-you. The service was great but we skipped dessert because we knew that the winery was offering Sam’s incredible Mac n’ Cheese (made with local goat cheese and other choice ingredients) as their sample for the holiday event across the driveway. The Holiday Shopping Spree event offers 16 wineries, tastings and food samples at each, recipes, discount coupons, free wine glasses and a wreath with ornaments from each stop for the ticket price and the coupon book usually more than covers the ticket price in savings for the serious vinophile.
