Martin, Janet, and Allison Keefe
On the 4th the Keefe's Fourth of July parade was rained out, so they rescheduled for lucky 07/07/07, a perfect sunny day.  Nearly 100 kids decorated bicycles, scooters, and wagons, and dressed up in patriotic costumes, and by 10:30am they were lined up at Autumn Ridge, ready to march.  Between 20 and 30 kazoo virtuosos formed a band at the rear, while a large inflatable Uncle Sam let the parade.  "I love seeing all the energy and the creativity of the kids for the parade to celebrate Independence Day," says orgainzer Janet Keefe.  It gives me tingles to see what they come up with.  And they get so excited about it."

Janet and husband Bob began the Fourth of July tradition 11 years ago, and it has been held about a half dozen times since then.  Now they rotate with Matt and Kristin Burt, who will host the parade at their house next year.  The costumes and floats are judged, and all the kids get prizes.  The parade is followed by a dish to pass lunch and games including a three legged race, two legged race, water balloon toss, potato sack race, wheelbarrow race, whipped cream and marshmallow pie eating contest.  "We did that a couple of years ago and I won, but I got really sick," said Bob Keefe.  "I'm going to watch this year."

ImageOver a hundred guests helped Marian Wilson celebrate her 100th birthday at Lansing United Methodist Church Sunday afternoon.  She was surrounded by family and friends, who gathered for a hotdog lunch and birthday cake.  Relatives came from Horseheads, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, while many friends came from Lansing.

Born in Hornel in 1907, she had two sisters and two brothers.   When she was first born she wasn't expected to live, but clearly she had other ideas about that!  Her family moved to Elmira, where she lived for most of her life.  She met and married Hillis Wilson, melt foreman for the General Electric foundry there.  They had one son, also named Hillis, who is now a retired engineer who lives in Lansing with his wife Judy and daughter Susie.

The weather couldn't dampen the spirits of the Lansing Lion's Club, which turned out at Myers Park for their annual 4th of July Barbecue.  While the rain kept some people away, many lined up to get take-out, or to eat in Myers Park under a tent set up for the occasion.  The cake wheel was popular despite the rain, earning $800 for the day.  And while umbrellas were standard fare, no one seemed particularly bothered by the rain.

ImageIthaca -- Although the weather in Tompkins  County can be unpredictable, the recent span of humid weather can have a detrimental effect on pets, particularly dogs in cars or chained outside. Pets can suffer brain damage, heat stroke or even death.

To protect your pets, the TC SPCA urges all pet owners to:

  • Make sure dogs and other pets have access to shade.
  • Make sure there is plenty of cool, fresh water to drink.
  • Do not leave older pets, pets with health problems, or short-nosed dogs like pugs outside in the heat.

Lansing's Board of Education bade farewell to Christine Iacobucci  at their Thursday meeting last week after six years of service on the board.  Iacobucci served two terms on the board before her defeat in the last election.  Her tenure on the board has been controversial and at times confrontational.  But she has said that she saw it as her role to ask hard questions and challenge decisions and the processes used to make them.
