posticon Public Sewer Information Meetings Set

Lansing's Sewer committee expanded its plan to reach the public by scheduling a series of public information meetings at the Lansing Town Hall.  The first is planned for this Wednesday at 7:30, another will be part of the September 20 Town Board meeting, and an open house is planned on Saturday, September 16 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Additionally a mailer will be sent to each property owner who lives within the proposed sewer district that summarizes the project and provides the basic facts.  Copies of the engineer's report that detail the project and include a list of charges on a per-property basis are also available at the Town Clerk's office.  Some information, including minutes of meetings, is posted on the committee's Web site.

The public information plan has been part of the committee's agenda since it began meeting more than two years ago, but this phase of their work ramped up several weeks ago as they put the finishing touches on the scope of the project itself.  The initial portion of the project is split into two segments, the $7.3 million trunk forced main sewer line that will connect the Town with the Cayuga Heights treatment plant, and a $10.95 million delivery system that will allow properties within the initial service area to hook up.

posticon Witches in Lansing: A New Novel

The Karber WitchesThe Karber WitchesIt's not easy being a witch.  People want your help, but they gossip about you behind your back.  You are accosted by the living and the dead.  You are kidnapped and it turns out your boyfriend is a serial killer.  And you are subject to religious persecution.  Even though Author Tanya Robbins set her novel in Lansing, she doesn't really think that would happen here.  "Maybe in Dryden," she jokes.

Her novel, 'The Karber Witches: Demons Among Us' is to be released on October 7th, but is available now on the publisher's Web site.  The book tells the story the Karber Witches, especially that of Kyleigh Karber, who goes through a series of life-altering experiences to fulfill her destiny.  Each Karber is born with a different psychic ability.  Kyleigh's is that she can see and speak to the dead.  That makes her already chaotic life more complicated.

posticon Registration Gatherings for Girl Scouts

Most girls join a local group for fun and friendship, but they also are building courage, confidence and character when they join the Girl Scouts. Girls find a safe place to grow and share new experiences, learn to relate to others, develop values, and contribute to society.

While girls may register any time of the year, many registration events are scheduled for September. Girls everywhere, ages 5 to 17, can be part of the fun and excitement. And, girls don’t have to join a group to reap the benefits Girl Scouting has to offer. Girls may be “Juliettes,” or registered individually and do activities and earn recognitions on their own, with friends or family. They may attend Girl Scout events in their communities, across country or across the world. “Juliettes,” are named after Girl Scouting’s founder, Juliette Gordon Low.

posticon Fall Is For Planting

Dan SegalDan SegalA little rain goes a long way this year. So many gardeners who have visited the nursery this year have noted that the rains have come right on time all spring and summer. Granted, some have come before we needed them, but we’re lucky to have endured only one or two dry spells this year, and gardens everywhere are showing themselves off for it. Quite a departure from last year.

Many of you have probably heard that fall is a good time to plant, but why is it? How does it work? Is fall planting the same as spring planting?

For the fourth year the Lansing Lions Club participated in the international "Peace Poster" competition.  Those winners competed in regional competitions, and the winners of the regionals competed in the international contest.   This year Lansing 6th grader Gregory Wasenko (he is entering 7th grade in September) won both the local and regional contests, coming in first among hundreds of entries.  "But I didn't want to do it for the winning," Gregory says.  "I wanted to do it for fun.  I draw for fun."

 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

My wife and I are going to vacation with my friend and his wife. We plan on sharing a suite—two bedrooms separated by a doorway. We will have to go into their part of the suite in order to use the bathroom, and if we want to watch some TV, we will have to sit in their room as the TV and couch are situated on their side. We like our friends a lot, but I’m not quite sure how it’s all going to work. We will be saving several hundred dollars by teaming up with them in the suite. Our stay with them will be two nights. Each day we will leave the motel at 8:30 and not return until 9 or 10 in the evening. Have you got any suggestions?

S.J.

posticon Karate Water Training at Myers

Print Print

Last Saturday about 30 karate students and their families descended on Myers Park for water training and a dish to pass lunch.  Lined up in their white gis, the traditional karate outfit, students of all levels came for the event.  This was a special session of the Lansing Recreation Department's Karate class that included five black belts, many white belts and all the levels in between.  "It's a lot of fun," says Sensei (teacher) Gail Lejoie.  "It's a good community builder, and gives people a chance to know each other in a different setting."
