The title comes with a cover story in the publication's February issue titled "Tops of the Town," and an awards dinner in downtown Buffalo in late February.
"We are honored to be thought of in such high regard within the food industry and community," said Frank Curci, Tops' chairman, president and CEO. "Our associates, customers and our community partners push us to be great every day. We're proud of what we do and will continue to provide the wide variety of fresh products at an exceptional value that our neighbors have come to expect from Tops."
Tops was considered for this award based on the company's position the marketplace as a leading full-service grocery store, its outstanding established consumer loyalty, growth in market share and sales, and a strong, local leadership team. Tops was selected as Independent Retailer of the Year through a six-month process whereby 10 retail candidates around the country are nominated by former winners, manufacturers and distributors. A panel of previous winners and trade association executives vote to award one winner.
