WebCams are small digital cameras that provide a live stream of images to visitors of a website. This camera was set up on January 12th, 2007. It's a Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX, attached via USB to a PC running Windows XP. A piece of software called TinCam, grabs a 640 x 480 pixel image from the webcam every 15 seconds and uploads the image to our main server.
Stephanie Vann, Marketing Director for the Ithaca Downtown Partnership, hopes to add more webcams Downtown. "It's pretty cool to be able to check the weather, look for familiar faces on the Commons, and just see what's going on Downtown at any given time. It gives people a vicarious experience of Downtown, especially in the cold weather. Once warmer weather arrives, we hope viewers will see musicians setting up for a concert, or a catch a festival in progress, and then come on down to join the fun."
