ITHACA, NY — In coordination with WOMEN’S EXPO 2007, Cayuga Radio Group is honoring “20 OUTSTANDING WOMEN YOU SHOULD KNOW.” The 20 women, representing a wide range of backgrounds and careers, will be honored during a ceremony on May 10 at the Ithaca Hilton Garden Inn.

A call for nominations promoted in January, February, and March on WHCU News-Talk 870, Lite Rock 97.3, Q-Country 103.7, and Progressive Talk 1470 WNYY in Ithaca yielded more than 200 names, according to Susan Johnston, General Manager of the four Cayuga Radio Group stations.

“We discovered through our nomination process that there are hundreds of women throughout the Finger Lakes area who deserve the recognition,” Johnston said. “This was not a popularity contest, but an opportunity to highlight a diverse group of women who are interesting and inspiring. They represent a sampling of women in our community with different careers, backgrounds, volunteer activities, and family lives.”

Johnston said the names of some of the women are familiar to many in the community, while others serve tirelessly behind the scene for many causes.

The inaugural group of “20 Outstanding Women You Should Know” includes: Melinda Sue Alvich, Colleen Barnes, Jalaja Bonheim, Marian Brown, Jennifer Engel, Shawn Galbreath, Peggy Haine, Brigid Hubberman, Laurie Linn, Ruth Lucas, Maj. Deborah Lugiano, Jemma Macera, Terry Martinez, LaBerta McGruder, Alice Reid, Constance V.A. Thompson, Catherine Valentino, Marianne Dougan Varn, Anke Wessels, and Lori Westervelt.

They will be honored at the Cayuga Radio Group Women’s Expo 2007, Thursday May 10, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ithaca Hilton Garden Inn. Johnston said the community is encouraged to attend the event , which is free and open to the public.
