AT&T’s high speed 3G network, now available to the Ithaca market, brings mobile broadband capability to customers in Ithaca, East Ithaca, Cayuga Heights, Forest Home, South Hill, Lansing, Enfield, Cornell University, Ithaca College and Cayuga Lake.
In addition to the company’s 3G expansion, AT&T recently added two new cell sites in Lansing and the northwest area of Ithaca.
“Students, professors, businesses and consumers in the Ithaca area all stand to benefit from our wireless network investment. Among other things, our 3G network supports the new Apple iPhone 3G, a device with a cool factor that both the young and young at heart can appreciate,” said Bob Holliday, vice president and general manager for AT&T’s wireless unit in upstate New York. “We’ve timed our 3G service to launch before the back-to-school rush, when many students return to the area. We’re also able to better support the local business community with increased wireless data speeds given that many retail outlets and restaurants see a seasonal increase in activity when the fall semester begins.”
The enhanced wireless network speed lets customers download a 5 MB file in 25 seconds, a three minute song (about 3MB) in 15 seconds and a ringtone that might take one minute and 45 seconds over slower mobile technologies – only takes an average of 25 seconds on AT&T’s 3G network.
With the addition of the Ithaca area the AT&T 3G network is now available in 310 U.S. major metropolitan areas. The company will deliver 3G service to nearly 350 leading U.S. markets by the end of 2008.
