In presenting the award, Lori Solomon-Duell, chair of the Tourism Excellence Awards committee, remarked that the Ithaca/Tompkins County Convention and Visitors Bureau and its community are “liberal thinkers and anything goes — they take chances that most would not. This is why they are able to brand their destination as smart and beautiful—basically they are someone everyone wants to date.”
Solomon-Duell noted that the CVB’s overall marketing strategy, including events such as “Winter Recess” and trip planning tools such as “My Ithaca Experience,” positions Ithaca and Tompkins County as “a unique destination that provides visitors with a memorable experience.”
The CVB’s marketing and advertising efforts have had a positive economic impact on the area, including a 24% increase in lodging since 2005, and generating total annual lodging revenues of nearly $45 million. Tourism is the sixth largest industry in Tompkins County, employing 3,400 people (indirectly and directly).
Fred Bonn, Director of the Ithaca/Tompkins County CVB, accepted the award during the presentation ceremony. “While this award is a great honor for our organization, it’s really a reflection of the strong and creative relationships we've been able to forge with our local tourism partners,” Bonn said. “They are the ones that keep the world saying Ithaca is Gorges!”
