star_120Better Housing For Tompkins County, Inc. has begun a major renovation of the Fountain Manor senior housing facility in Slaterville Springs, in the Town of Caroline.  Funding for the $2.4 million project was secured through a grant from the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal's (DHCR) Housing Trust Fund Program. The revitalization is expected to continue through the spring of 2011, approximately nine months.

Improvements to the facility include the installation of a new elevator and upgrades to the mechanical systems with the installation of energy efficient heating and cooling systems. The apartments will receive improved windows and doors, new kitchen cabinetry and appliances and the residents will enjoy an expansion of their community room.

This rehabilitation project focuses on improving handicapped accessibility and energy efficiency using environmentally friendly materials and practices.  Richard Cowan, Property Manager for Better Housing, explained that the goal of the project was to enhance building systems, performance and amenities, while maintaining its affordability. “These improvements will ensure that Fountain Manor is an affordable housing option for the elderly for years to come.” said Cowan.

As a New York State certified Rural Preservation Company (RPC) serving rural Tompkins County, Better Housing manages Fountain Manor as part of a portfolio of 121 apartments throughout Tomkins County that provide affordable housing for independent seniors age 62 or over and the disabled at any age.
