star_120The Labor Initiative in Promoting Solidarity (LIPS), an Ithaca College student organization, is set to meet with Ithaca College President Thomas Rochon this Thursday, December 9th, regarding important labor issues on the Ithaca campus. The event was designed to give LIPS the opportunity to have a civil discussion with the college’s administration about concerns for on-campus workers. LIPS is hoping to talk to President Rochon about the possibility of extending the college’s current living wage plus 50 cents standard to on-campus subcontracted workers, such as those of Sodexo. LIPS will also turn over a petition for better working conditions with the signatures of hundreds of Ithaca College students and workers.

LIPS will present four main demands during the meeting in regards to on-campus subcontracted workers: enacting a living wage, comparable benefits to college employees, respecting the right of workers to organize, and guaranteeing more job security.  LIPS is hoping that the statutes of Ithaca College’s contract with Sodexo will be made public, and that the cost of subcontracting with the company is released so that possible alternatives can be researched.

The event is a closed-door meeting with members of LIPS and the Ithaca College administration. The goal of the meeting will be to make the administration aware of LIPS, on-campus workers, students, and the community’s concerns regarding subcontracted workers at Ithaca College, and to gauge the administration’s position on these issues.

The Labor Initiative in Promoting Solidarity is a student organization that aims to spread awareness about labor issues in Tompkins County, the City of Ithaca, and Ithaca College.  Their goal is to educate individuals and organize campaigns and initiatives that promote change in current labor standards for the purpose of social and economic justice.

The meeting is not open to the public.
