“We anticipate an 8% increase in need this year. Last year we brought smiles to 1,261 kids, which was about 750 families,” says Bill Apgar, vice president of Cops, Kids & Toys. “This is a huge volunteer effort. Law enforcement rallies together with community members to make this a success,” says Apgar.
As the name suggests, the “Cops” in Cops, Kids & Toys are Tompkins County Sheriffs, New York State Police, Tompkins County Department of Probation, New York State Park Police, Ithaca Police, Trumansburg Police, Groton Police, Dryden Police, Cayuga Heights Police, Cornell University Campus Police, Ithaca College Patrol Officers and TC3 Public Safety. Established in the early 1980’s, Cops, Kids & Toys has grown every year. The application process for 2011 ended on December 1 and deliveries will be made on December 15th.
“Triphammer Marketplace is proud of our association with Cops, Kids & Toys,” says Richard Thaler, co-owner of The Marketplace with his brother Manley Thaler.
For the past two years Triphammer Marketplace has donated space to store and package the toys. This year, they are also hosting a free community event, HOLIDAYfest on December 11th, which will include tours of Santa’s Workshop. This will give the public a behind the scenes view of the Cops, Kids & Toy’s systems to buy, gather and package toys which will make many children happy this holiday season.
