October 2011 marked Johnston’s 25th anniversary with the group of Ithaca radio stations. WHCU AM/FM was purchased by Eagle Broadcasting in 1986 from Cornell University. Over the past 25 years the group has grown to 2 AM stations, 3 FM stations and 2 experimental HD stations. In 2005, Eagle Broadcasting was acquired by Saga Communications and Johnston has been the General Manager of the group since the acquisition.
Remarking on her tenure with Cayuga Radio Group, Johnston notes: “What I imagined in 1986 to be a 2-3 year ‘start-up and turn around’ for Eagle Broadcasting, turned into a life changing experience. I fell in love with radio; its intimacy and power and the effect that well managed radio stations filled with caring, passionate people can have on the community it serves”.
Susan and her husband Jim will remain in the Ithaca area, where she will be re-inventing her Act 2.
