For the month of May, you can see the output of that inspiration at Two Wheels to Freedom: Ithaca’s First Annual Juried Bike Art Show, showing at Collegetown Bagels downtown on Aurora Street. The works of eighteen Ithaca-based or Ithaca-connected artists are brought together in a vibrant collection of bicycle themed photographs, prints, and paintings.
You’ll see images of bicycles from around Ithaca and around the world; images of cyclists who go fast, and cyclists who take their time; three tributes to cyclists lost to tragic events; an abstract impression of learning to ride; and numerous celebrations of the feeling of freedom one often gets when out on a bicycle ride. Included in the show are artists Susan Keough, Robert Grant, Taliah Lempert, Jon Reis, Laura Glenn, Sara Gaechter, Margaret Corbit, Jeanne Leccese, Karen James, Leslie Sandman, Gwen Elizabeth Bullock, Susan Larkin, Rebecca Godin, Jane grace Taylor, Katherine Banko, Molly Bargar, Annamiek Haralson, and Susan Verberg. The opening reception is 5-8pm on Friday May 2nd, as part of Downtown Ithaca’s gallery night. The show runs from May 1st to May 31st and is open daily from 6:30am to 8pm.
Two Wheels to Freedom has a selection committee of five local artists and art organizers, and is coordinated by the Creating Healthy Places Project, which has a mission to help people get more daily activity in their lives. Just as every participating artist brings their own personal intention to their work, the coordinators bring an intention to the overall show; they hope the art will inspire viewers to enjoy the beauty that can be found in bicycles and be inspired to add more bicycling to their daily lives.
This first annual bicycle art show is also one of a number of local events celebrating National Bike Month, including Streets Alive! Ithaca on Sunday May 4th and Bike to Work and School Day on Friday May 16.
