On September 12, the Sciencenter will join eight other museums around the country in a special hands-on presentation, 'Building with Biology.' At this 2-hour Showtime! program, guests will meet local biologists and researchers from Dr. Julius Lucks' Lab at Cornell University and students from the Cornell iGem (International Genetically Engineered Machines Competition) team, to take part in activities and conversation around the science of synthetic biology. From 1 – 3 pm, guests at the museum can take part in activities that explore real-world research, from new food product development to designer cells that solve current environmental problems, and provide their feedback directly to the scientists involved.
Opening on September 19, come explore the wildly whimsical world of patterns at the Sciencenter's new featured exhibition,Pattern Wizardry. Donning a 'pattern cape' and wand, travel through four interactive rooms – 'Spiral Spells,' 'Tessellation Station,' 'Branch Branch,' and 'Linear Lab,' – each focusing on a different type of pattern. Then investigate 'Symmetry Sorcery' to uncover the wonders of symmetry in butterflies, embroidered designs, and yourself when you climb into a giant kaleidoscope and become part of a pattern. The community is invited to discover the wonderful world of patterns during the exhibition opening weekend, Saturday, September 19, 10am – 5pm, and Sunday, September 20, 12pm – 5pm.
Then, on September 26, the community is invited to a day of celebration with the opening of the museum's completed, science-themed Sciencenter Mini-Golf course. Immediately following the unveiling, guests will get to tour the course and talk with Sciencenter representatives about what it takes to build an exhibit. Sciencenter Mini-Golf will be open for public play beginning at 1pm. Indoors, guests can take part in interactive programs throughout the day highlighting the Sciencenter's recently launched capital campaign, Curious. Confident. Inspired.
