Sciencenter Executive Director Charlie Trautmann says, "We are grateful for the generosity of our supporters who have made it possible for us to offer this morning of science and discovery to children who may not otherwise visit the museum because of their special sensory needs."
For this exclusive event, Sciencenter staff make modifications to the museum to create a relaxed and accepting environment. These modifications include: light and sound reduction, additional visual safety signage, and designated quite rooms filled with supportive sensory tools and therapy toys provided by the Franziska Racker Centers.
Maureen Mozeleski, Team Leader and Behavior Specialist at Franziska Racker Centers says, "Sensory Hours at the Sciencenter are wonderful! They allow people to experience the Sciencenter who might not otherwise be able to enjoy all that it has to offer on an average day. Children with sensory issues are able to join in the fun of an interactive learning environment – it's great!"
After the Sciencenter's November Sensory Hours, parent attendee Dan McKee, said, "As the father of an autistic child, I applaud the Sciencenter for its consideration in setting up Sensory Hours for special needs children. My son noticeably appreciated the gentler lighting, less crowded spaces, and wide variety of sensory activities."
Sensory Hours at the Sciencenter is on Sunday, April 10 from 10 am – 12 pm.
