music4On May 1, 2016, the Ithaca Gay Men's Chorus (IGMC) will perform their Spring Concert, "May Gay Day…Let's Sing" at 3:00 PM in the First Baptist Church, located in Ithaca's historic Dewitt Park at 309 North Cayuga Street.

IGMC will perform one of its most varied programs, bringing back a few old favorites and adding new and challenging pieces including: an a capella version of Dona nobis pacem by Joseph Gregorio, What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor (arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw) and the premiere of a new piece written and arranged by Tom Peters (former accompanist for IGMC).  Proceeds from the concert will go towards the chorus' annual operating expenses, which include the purchase of music, rights to perform certain pieces, and compensation for their talented professional staff.

Sam Kwan continues as director for this concert, her third in this her first season with the chorus.  Soon after May 1 Sam will be receiving her degrees from the B.M. Music Education/B.M. Vocal Performance Programs in the Whalen School of Music at Ithaca College.  As a junior Sam taught at the Immaculate Conception School under the mentorship of Dr. Emily Mason and Mr. Michael Roddy.  Sam has studied choral conducting, rehearsal techniques, and repertoire under the mentorship of Dr. Derrick Fox and Dr. Janet Galván.  While at Ithaca College, Ms. Kwan sung in three main-stage operas and a handful of student-run and community operas.  In 2015 she appeared as Aunt Cecilia March in Ithaca College's production of Adamo's Little Women.

Stepping up this season from the ranks of the second tenors is Sam Peters as accompanist for the chorus.  Sam is an accomplished musician with degrees in music composition from the University of Delaware and Syracuse University.

IGMC was founded in 2009 and first appeared as a guest of the VOICES Multi-Cultural Chorus.  VOICES and IGMC are members of Ithaca Community Choruses (ICC), an organization providing opportunities for Tompkins County residents to perform in professionally directed choral groups.  The group is the only inclusive all-male choral group in Ithaca, proudly recognizing the talents of both straight and gay men in their ensemble.
