In dance composition, students learn the tools to give 'there-ness' to dance's inherently ephemeral nature. Composing the moving body in space and through time, the choreographer designs dance to express his or her ideas. These learned strategies of embodying the imagination become the individual's unique tools for navigating not only the space for dance but also the larger forum of society.

"Dance gives you the extraordinary ability to study a shared knowledge and, with your physical and mindful body, create dances that express differences in ideas, stories, feelings, and emotions," says Jumay Chu, instructor and senior lecturer in the Cornell University Department of Performing and Media Arts (PMA).

Under the direction of Chu and with assistant director/PMA graduate student Rosalie Purvis, the student choreographers and PMA dance faculty will present the Mini Locally Grown Dance Festival December 1–3. The program of nine choreographed dances ranges from abstract forms to personal narratives, individually and collectively expressing the resilience of our times in their adaptability and their forgiveness.

Performances of the Mini Locally Grown Dance Festival will be in the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts' Class of '56 Dance Theatre December 1, 2 & 3 at 7:30 p.m.
