The Jazz Department at Cornell welcomes its first guest artist of the year on Friday, September 8, at 8:00 PM at the Barnes Hall Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Actual Trio is a New York-based progressive, high energy, straight-ahead jazz trio with an unmistakable sound. Led by drummer Matt Garrity, an Ithaca native, Actual Trio has been performing together since 1996 and features Pete Smith on guitar and David Ambrosio on bass. The group plays a variety of original compositions as well as their own creative arrangements of standard jazz repertoire, including the music of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Freddie Hubbard.

The members of Actual Trio have performed and recorded with the best in the business including Madeline Peyroux, David Williams, Joel Forrester, Ron McClure, Ben Monder, Jerome Richardson, Kenny Werner, Ingrid Jensen, Rich Perry, Buddy DeFranco, Norah Jones, and Vincent Herring, who will be visiting Cornell later this semester. Each member of the trio brings their experiences performing with other artists to the group. To create their arrangements and compositions, they often start with a single theme or idea and then expand on it collaboratively. Garrity says that together, they draw from their collective experiences of life and music and always keep the music fresh.

The trio has performed all over New York in venues such as The Blue Note, Birdland, Smalls, Smoke, The Jazz Standard, Dizzy's Club, Zinc Bar, Kitano Hotel, and clubs and festivals all over the world.

Their debut album, Actual Trio Live, was recorded at the Bowery Poetry Club in NYC.
