As a psychology double major at Cornell University, Mahnoor Azim Tiwana ’20 has a keen interest in studying the human psyche. Inspired by her second major in performing and media arts and minor in fine arts, Tiwana turned an artistic lens on the study of the mind for her original play “keepsakes.”
“keepsakes" is a psychoanalytical memory play that follows the journey of a young Pakistani woman, Laila, as she learns how to navigate her emotions and overcome the past. A reading of “keepsakes” will stream for free on October 16 at 5:00 p.m., immediately followed by a moderated discussion. Check the Facebook event for streaming details as they become available.
Retooling her play for a virtual presentation has not been without its challenges, but Tiwana credits her mentors in the Department of Performing and Media Arts with supporting her to push through the process. “My actors’ willingness to experiment and navigate the world of Zoom-acting with me has led to breakthroughs in my writing process,” notes Tiwana.
Tiwana anticipates that all audience members will connect with some aspect of her play. “The beauty of the human psyche is that its complexity is universal,” says Tiwana. “There is something in this play for everyone, or at least I hope so.”
