Two travelers looking for a place to stay the night find themselves in a magical land where a bumbling servant guards a sleeping princess, where tango dancers are summoned out of thin air, where people are awarded for their funny walks, and where a wandering group of whispering creatures climb over everything, including each other, and make a good night’s sleep difficult to get. All of this is told without words by a company of dancers and musicians.
The cast includes dancers both fresh and seasoned, from 9-year-old Erin Hilgartner (known to Kitchen audiences for her performances in THE MOZART MYSTERY, THE ODYSSEY part 2, and ADVENTURE IN APARTMENT G#) to Stephen Nunley, a professional New York dancer for many years. Also in the cast are young dancers James Potter, Chunmei McKernan (WINTER TALES and REBECCA RETURNS at the Kitchen), and Erin Rieger (WINTER TALES), Ithaca College students John X. Miller, Clint Hromsco, and Charlie Forray, Hobart and William Smith student Sarah Olsen, York University graduate student Ofer Ravid, and IC grad Meredith Conroy.
Sally Lamb's intricate score is brought to life by an ensemble of four musicians: Christopher Morgan Loy on piano, Ithaca College music graduate student Adam Butalewicz on clarinet, Ithaca High School cellist Ryan Allen-Parrot, and Kitchen Theatre Associate Producer Lesley Greene on flute.
Choreographer Rachel Lampert, also the KTC's Artistic Director, is a playwright, director and choreographer. She has authored many original Family Fare productions (EMMETT & ELLA'S BIG APPLE ESCAPADE, ADVENTURE IN APARTMENT G#, Rebecca Returns, The Mozart Mystery, I Have a Song to Sing O!, Winter Tales, A December Suite, The Sisters Fitzenstarts Fall Recital, and Fools! Schmools!) and adaptations (The Odyssey parts I & II, A Christmas Carol, Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore and The Mikado). Rachel is a 4-time recipient of NEA Choreography Fellowships. Her concert dance works have been in the repertory of numerous dance companies in the U.S. and abroad.
Composer Sally Lamb's works have been performed by the Ariadne String Quartet, Cornell University Wind Ensemble, Ithaca College Wind Ensemble, Eastman Wind Orchestra, the Society for New Music, Cayuga Vocal Ensemble, North/South Consonance, the June in Buffalo festival and at the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. She was awarded the 2001 Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and has received awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, Meet-the-Composer, and ASCAP.
