ITHACA-The Tompkins County Public Library will host critically-acclaimed lecturer Milton Sernett for an illustrated discussion of New York's Freedom Trail, Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the Borg Warner Community Meeting Room.

A retired Syracuse University professor, Sernett, is a well-known scholar among abolition movement enthusiasts. His library presentation will tell the story of the Underground Railroad in the context of the religious and reform movements of the pre-Civil War period, including the temperance crusade and the women's rights campaign. Frederick Douglass, Gerrit Smith, Harriet Tubman, and others will come to life in this lecture, as will the story of Syracuse's infamous 1851 "Jerry Rescue".

Complete with illustrations, Sernett's presentation will educate and enlighten audiences about the important role New York played on the Underground Railroad.

This program is free and open to the public and has been made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities' Speakers in the Humanities program. This lecture also concludes our 2008 Community Read of the novel March, by Geraldine Brooks.
