The State of the Art Gallery will open Gallery Night in Downtown Ithaca with its 20th Annual Juried Photography Show.  The exhibit features photographers from across upstate New York and many of them will be present at the reception. Prize winners will be announced. The judge for this year's competition is Wilka Roig, Assistant Professor of Photography at Cornell. This exhibition has become a very popular event in the central New York area both in terms of those who enter and those who come to view the variety of photographic mediums represented in the show.

Other participating galleries include the Community School of Music and Arts, Shangri-La, The Upstairs Gallery, The Titus Gallery, Belle Melange, The Ink Shop Printmaking Shop and Olive Branch Press, and Sola Gallery. Highlights at these galleries include Metromorphose: An Exhibition of Digital Fine Art Photography, by James Spitznagel at The Upstairs Gallery. Spitznagel’s futuristic digital images borrow scenes from everyday life and distort them to the point that they are no longer recognizable.  His photographic works are edited and modified through computer imaging techniques and employ a restricted palette, slick sense of geometry and pixilated rhythmic movement. To chase the winter blues away, Shangri-La will open its new exhibit of Batik Art by Jaka Wuryanto of Indonesia. Jaka Wuryanto was born in Yogyakarta, a city on the island of Java in Indonesia. He infuses his works with vibrant color to reveal sensuously touching scenes of traditional Southeast Asian life.

Arts-related activities will also take place at Ten Thousand Villages and Home Green Home, two independent businesses that are located in downtown Ithaca.

Legendary folk musician Joan Baez will also be performing at the State Theater of Ithaca that night. Tickets and information are available on the theater’s website, www.stateofithaca.com

Gallery Night in Downtown Ithaca is a quarterly event that has grown in popularity over the past few years, due in large part to the fact that all of the participating galleries and businesses are within a short walking distance of each other and surrounded by many restaurants and dining establishments.

It is expanding this year to include Art House Night in Downtown Ithaca, which will be held on the first Friday of April, June, July, August, October and November. Art House Nights in downtown Ithaca will be an expanded, but more casual version of Gallery Night in Downtown Ithaca that includes many more businesses, restaurants and dining establishments.
