ImageSlush Fest is returning to downtown Ithaca after an absence of more than a decade, and the return of all things muddy features an afternoon of activities for all ages and fundraising for the Ithaca Festival and the United Way of Tompkins County.

Slush Fest will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the Ithaca Commons.  It’s free and open to the public. Slush Fest was a springtime tradition for many years in Ithaca, but eventually went the way of the Pet Rock, Cabbage Patch Kids and electric typewriters.

It’s being revived with a fundraising twist that will benefit the United Way of Tompkins County and the Ithaca Festival. Some downtown businesses will be donating 10 percent of their proceeds for the day, and a tree and flower sale will also be held, with all of the proceeds from both activities going to the two organizations. The United Way of Tompkins County is currently wrapping up its 2008 Community Campaign and will also be staffing a booth at Slush Fest.

Slush Fest will feature live music from four local bands. Other activities include arts and crafts for kids, an Art Corridor in which student artists from Ithaca College will display their works, a Raincoat-Making competition, Dry T-Shirt contest and Rain boot Fashion Show/Competition.

Raincoat-making contestants will be judged on their ability to make a raincoat with duct tape and plastic. They’ll be asked to wear them while a bucket of water is poured on the coat to see if it’s water-tight and the winner will be crowned the winner of the Dry T-Shirt competition. Stylish, designer rain boots are a current fashion trend for many young women, and the Slush Fest will also feature a Rain boot Fashion Show/Competition.

Slush Fest will be held rain or shine, and for once, event planners are not afraid of rain ruining their event!
